Tang Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the duo exhibition of Rizal Hasan and Wannita Tankeng, “Whispering Horizons,” at our Bangkok space from February 1 to March 9, 2025. This exhibition will showcase more than 20 artworks from both artists.
The horizon symbolizes the boundaries of the known world while hinting at an invitation to the unknown. “Whispering,” on the other hand, serves as a metaphor for subtle yet profound inner perceptions that are often overlooked. The exhibition, titled Whispering Horizons, showcases the distinctive creations of Rizal Hasan and Wannita Tankeng, exploring how individuals find meaning amidst the complexities of reality and the fluidity of perception. Through their works, Hasan conveys inner tranquility using geometric compositions and vibrant colors, while Tankeng blurs the boundaries between reality and imagination through the fluidity of light and shadow. Together, they construct an aesthetic space centered on the concept of “boundaries” - both as constraints and as starting points for freedom.

Rizal Hasan’s art is deeply influenced by everyday life and cultural memory. He masterfully combines geometric forms, popular culture, and Indonesian traditional mythology, using bright colors to depict the tension between contemporary anxiety and inner peace. In his series Watering the Thoughts in Our Mind, Hasan’s gentle imagery reflects a yearning for psychological balance, while works like Calm Your Mind and Be Grateful and Just Relax emphasize the importance of slowing down to resist the overwhelming influx of information. French philosopher Michel Foucault’s theory of “Care of the Self” underscores how individuals reconstruct their subjectivity through meditation or creative practices. Hasan’s work is a direct response to this philosophy, offering not only a therapeutic approach to visual storytelling but also a critique of the fast-paced modern lifestyle. His art invites viewers to step away from external chaos and return to a place of inner peace.

In contrast to Hasan’s geometric order, Wannita Tankeng’s creations focus on the interaction between light and transparent objects, exploring the visual transformations of everyday items through the refraction of light. In her Plastic Aesthetics series, Tankeng captures subtle variations in light to transform mundane objects into new visual forms. Meanwhile, in works Ethereal Rose and Moonlit Lily, she combines the beauty of nature with emotional narratives, presenting a poetic expression that transcends reality. By manipulating light, Tankeng reveals the limitations of perception and invites viewers to reimagine their relationship with the world and themselves. Her work extends sensory experience while reshaping cognition, offering an artistic journey that bridges the seen and the unseen.
Despite their contrasting styles, the two artists find resonance in their shared exploration of “boundaries.” Hasan emphasizes inner order and tranquility through geometry and color, while Tankeng expands the possibilities of reality through the fluid interplay of light and shadow. Together, they elevate art beyond mere visual pleasure, transforming it into a profound bridge for emotional connection and self-reflection. In this process, art becomes a language for reinterpreting the self and the world, guiding viewers toward deeper existential insights.

The horizon is not just an endpoint but an invitation to the unknown. In the artistic worlds of Hasan and Tankeng, the horizon symbolizes a dialogue between the self and the world - finding order within chaos and discovering meaning in the midst of disorder. In the complexities of life, it is perhaps only by listening to the whispers of our inner selves that we can uncover our truest identities.
