What does street art mean to you? Many might picture roadside artwork, spray-painted walls, or perhaps associate it with male artists in society's shadowy corners, expressing their thoughts through public art. Yet regardless of street art's true definition, one cannot deny that today, this roadside artform has migrated from concrete walls to gallery spaces, increasingly claiming its place in mainstream art.

"Swoon", or "Caledonia Curry", stands as one of street art's most formidable forces. Her memorable creations transcend traditional street art boundaries—whilst rooted in street art tradition, her work extends far beyond city pavements to museums, art galleries, and even the open seas. Each piece delicately weaves together personal narratives and social commentary.

Before this street art queen's first Asian exhibition arrives at SAC Gallery in Thailand, let's glimpse into her remarkable portfolio.

Her international breakthrough came with Swimming Cities of Serenissima (2009)—three vessels crafted from salvaged materials, crewed by 30 souls, sailing the Adriatic Sea from Slovenia to Venice's celebrated Biennale. This extraordinary project drew inspiration from the intricate mangrove landscapes of her childhood Florida home.

Another noteworthy creation, Submerged Motherlands (2014), transformed Brooklyn Museum with an enchanting installation featuring a towering paper tree and shipwreck sculptures. This work masterfully intertwined concepts of homeland and maternal body, addressing both personal grief over her mother's passing and broader environmental concerns along the Atlantic coast.

From United States to Bangkok, Swoon brings Cicada (2020), making its Asian debut at SAC Gallery. This large-scale installation merges stop-motion puppetry with video art animation, drawing parallels between the artist's personal evolution and a cicada's physical metamorphosis.

Adding special significance to her Thai visit are new works created during her residency at SAC Residency Chiang Mai. Collaborating with local artisans to craft materials recovered from Northern Thailand's flood debris.

To witness how these pieces unfold, visit "Homecoming", Swoon's exhibition running from 25 January to 12 April 2025 at SAC Gallery.
