Mantis Shrimp Matrix

Lip Talk (Sarah K. Pedinotti)

Date:

06 February 2025 - 16 March 2025

“ ATTA x Lip Talk ” will be on display from February 6 – March 16, 2025 , with an opening reception on February 13, 2025 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, where you can meet and talk with the artists.

The matrix of the mantis shrimp

The Grasshopper Matrix is a multi-sensory installation that explores themes of perception, ancestry, and the search for meaning through the perspective of living things. One of the most amazing things about nature, the mantis shrimp is its ability to see ultraviolet, infrared and polarized light, allowing it to perceive the world beyond human vision. The exhibition asks: “ What does it mean to truly see ? and “ How can we expand our perception not just biologically, but creatively, ancestrally, and spiritually ?”

All living things experience the world through a perceptual framework determined by their biology, instincts, and environment. Scientists call this the Umwelt , which means each individual's unique world of perception. The grasshopper's vision Completely different from humans, it challenges us to imagine existence beyond human perception. Although we may never be able to see like the mantis shrimp, the attempt to translate perception through art is an act. Expressing love, trying to push your own boundaries and expanding your imagination becomes an exercise in self-discipline.

As we explore our ancestral connections to the mantis shrimp, we begin to understand that perception is not simply a physiological function, but a cultural legacy shaped by generations of adaptation and survival. Art becomes the bridge. Connecting worlds, allowing us to see through imaginative and magical eyes, step into realities beyond our own.

The exhibition invites viewers into a surreal landscape that blends high art and pop culture, with humor, science, and profound philosophical questions at its core. The Mantis Shrimp Matrix is a contemplation of how humans interpret the world. Art How does it help us access the unseen, and how can ancestral knowledge connect us to forces beyond human perception?

Experience the Matrix

Visitors will interact with custom-built equipment designed to simulate the mantis shrimp's unique vision and translate it into sound, as the mantis shrimp's perception of light differs from that of humans. Fundamentally, sound is perhaps a more accurate way to experience its multidimensional visual experience — not as a still image, but as a vibrating, expanding field of information.

The exhibition also includes a coral reef sculpture made from marine plastic debris, which acts as both a data archive and an ecosystem. As a data archive, it records the debris left behind by humans, giving us clues to our impact on the ocean as an ecosystem. It reflects how living things adapt and change, even in hostile or man-made environments.

Finally, the crab's large, glowing, multi-colored eyes convey a story scattered from the ocean's depths, evoking a sense of presence that is both bizarre and ancient. These elements work together to challenge our understanding of Perception begs the question: “ What else can we not see ?”

Beyond the Sight: Art, Compassion, and the Unknown

Through play, abstract expression, and curiosity about the unseen, The Grasshopper's Matrix explores the intersections of science, art, and the unknown, much like early humans who painted on cave walls to… Understanding the World This exhibition seeks to illuminate the mysteries that lie beyond the limits of our perception — not to answer questions, but to invite a deeper engagement with the vision itself.

This is an invitation to push the boundaries of our own Umwelt, imagine the experiences of others, and find meaning in the shared imagination that makes art and empathy possible.
