Concept

This body of work, featuring photographs of sculptures from gravesites, reflects not only humanity’s effort to preserve the memory and meaning of those who have passed, but also explores the complex relationship between eternity and impermanence in human life. These sculptures serve as symbolic memorials—attempts to eternalize remembrance—yet they simultaneously embody the natural cycle of arising, remaining, and passing away.

By printing these images onto marble—a material known for its durability and longevity—the work creates a striking contrast between the permanence of human-made commemorations and the impermanence of life they represent. Marble, traditionally a symbol of eternity, becomes a medium that paradoxically speaks to the fragility of life when paired with photographic images of mortality.

This interplay between the enduring nature of the material and the transience of life invites viewers to contemplate the movement of emotions and the condition of existence. Recognizing life’s impermanence allows us to more deeply appreciate the present moment and reflect on the essence of being.

In Buddhist philosophy, the contemplation of death (maranasati) helps cultivate awareness of life’s fragility and teaches us to live mindfully and without negligence. This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the impermanence of life while appreciating what humans create in memory of those who have departed. The combination of marble’s “eternity” and life’s “transience” opens a space for profound reflection on the meaning of existence and the importance of living with purpose.
