Kader Attia's first solo exhibition in Asia, titled "Urgency of Existence," will be showcased at the Jim Thompson Art Center from November 23, 2024, to March 23, 2025. Curated by Gridthiya Gaweewong, director of the Jim Thompson Art Center and the recent Thailand Biennale Chiang Rai 2023, this exhibition considers the themes of gathering and separation, both in a literal and a metaphorical sense as a means of addressing the historical, cultural, and psychological effects of colonialism and the process to revisiting trauma caused by colonialism. The exhibition revolves around Attia's long-standing exploration of the concept of repair. This theme, central to his work for over a decade, expands on his previous show, "Open World: Thailand Biennale Chiang Rai 2023," in which he explored the historical connections between Chiang Saen and the world. In "Urgency of Existence," Attia will broaden this focus to encompass global decolonization and crypto colonization in Thailand and its hinterland.
The exhibition showcases a wide variety of media, from paper installations to newly commissioned film. Accompanying the exhibition, a series of public programs will provide deeper insights into the philosophical and decolonial dimensions of Attia's oeuvre.
