Octave Maze (Asvin @ Bangkok Design Week)

Wit Pimkanchanapong

Date:

08 February 2025 - 23 February 2025

Asvin has joined Bangkok Design Week 2025, showcasing an art installation that weaves together the narrative of the space by Wit Pimkanchanapong. Wit has spent the past few years sharing his perspectives through his series of mazes. His collection began with traditional tribal mazes set against natural landscapes and gradually evolved to adapt to the confined spaces of modern metropolises, incorporating pulley systems controlled by computer programming to respond to various conditions.

Octave Maze is designed specifically for Asvin, once the cradle of modern Thai cinema, music, and drama—now brought back to life after being closed for nearly 40 years. This latest work interacts with musical sound, featuring 88 illuminated moving panes activated by the 88 keys of a piano. Coincidentally, this number also marks the 88th anniversary of Than Fai Kao (The Old Flame), the first film by Prince Bhanubandhu Yugala.

Octave Maze therefore features early Thai film soundtracks composed by Prince Bhanubandhu Yugala, including Bua Khao (White Lotus), Nai Fun (In Dreams), and Lom Huan (The Returning Wind). More than an art installation, Octave Maze serves as a symbolic blessing for the reopening of this historic building.

Though Wit never lived in the era of Prince Bhanubandhu Yugala, he feels a deep connection to the prince’s artistic spirit—one filled with humor, romance, sophistication, and charisma. His understanding of this remarkable figure is shaped by the insights of legendary figures such as Janaprakal Chandruang, who influenced him in his youth, and Prof. Dr. Poonpit Amatyakul, whose recollections of the prince’s compositions never cease to inspire.

Wit holds immense admiration for Prince Bhanubandhu Yugala’s avant-garde vision, experimental streak, and passion for cutting-edge technology—qualities that led him to create what was, in essence, a media lab ahead of its time. This spirit of innovation remains extraordinary even today. With Octave Maze, Wit offers a humble tribute, hoping to delight the “original owner” of this historic site—whom he reveres as the “OG” of artists.
