"Understanding it as The Three Characteristics of Existence, spontaneous, and normal.”
"Mental Formations and Changes" is an exhibition of paintings about understanding the mind, often stimulated by external stimuli. Sometimes, it is a good thought. Other times, it is not. It is like a surface of water endlessly rippled without peace. If you understand, you will be happy. If not, you will suffer because the mind is chaotic. The drawings that unfold from the gilded black lacquer patterns in traditional Thai paintings reflect the state of the mind that ripples, moves, and dances according to the impact of the six senses of humans, whether through the ears, eyes, nose, tongue, body, or heart. It reminds us to focus, be mindful of our thoughts, and see the change that is the essence of life as the Three Characteristics of Existence, spontaneous, and normal. By doing so, the mind can be released from impermanent attachment.
About the artist
Suporn Kaewda is a Thai artist from Ubon Ratchathani province. He graduated with a bachelor's and master's degree from the Department of Thai Arts, Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University. However, Suporn's love for Thai art began in childhood at the candle procession during the Buddhist Lent, an important tradition of Ubon Ratchathani province, his hometown. From then on, it became a unique contemporary Thai traditional work with white dermatograph lines on a black background.
His art depicts the moment a water circle is touched by something before creating ripples in a still atmosphere. This combination of Buddhist concepts with artistic aesthetics that minimize the form and leave only the essence has made Suporn's work win the Excellent Award from the "Bring Good Things to Life" Art Competition in 2009, followed by the 2nd Prize, Silver Medal from the 32nd Bualuang Painting Competition, and successfully won the 1st prize, Gold Medal from the 56th National Exhibition of Art. Suporn then began to exhibit his work in his first solo exhibition, "Between Birth and Decay", at DOB Hualamphong Gallery, Bangkok. Throughout his ten-year career, Suporn has been committed to creating and exhibiting art, while receiving awards from important competitions, both in Thailand and abroad. He is recognized as an important artist in the contemporary Thai art circle today.
