By Aina Sairta Swartz (BAC Reviewer)
The first Thai-language production of Duncan Macmillan’s Lungs at LiFE Theatre is an intimate and deeply engaging adaptation that retains the heart and urgency of the original. Directed and translated by Keng Sanhawit Methi Anuwat, this production skillfully navigates the play’s sharp dialogue, emotional intensity, and thought-provoking themes with a fresh and compelling energy that resonates with a Thai audience.
Despite the small and intimate space of LiFE Theatre, the audience was fully engaged, their eagerness palpable from start to finish. A character-driven story like Lungs hinges on the strength of its performers, and this production delivers admirably. The two actors give remarkable performances, seamlessly navigating the dense, rapid-fire dialogue and long monologues with a natural ease. Their chemistry is evident — an essential component for a two-person play — imbuing their conflicts with an element of honesty.
The stage itself is also interesting — the use of columns evokes a sense of openness, almost reminiscent of a colosseum, while the curved floors and walls create a warped perspective that adds an intriguing visual dynamic to the performance. The production’s transitions between time shifts are particularly well-executed, maintaining an engaging rhythm that keeps the audience engrossed. Moments such as the up-right bed scene showcase inventive blocking that maximizes the intimate stage space in innovative ways. The lighting design, especially the cool, shadow-casting hues, complements these transitions beautifully, reinforcing shifts in tone and emotion.
Overall, this Thai adaptation of Lungs is a triumph. The dedication of its cast and creative team shines through, successfully bringing this internationally acclaimed work to life while maintaining its essence and emotional impact. With only six performances, this is an opportunity not to be missed for theatergoers in Bangkok looking to experience a fresh, thought-provoking piece that speaks to contemporary anxieties with authenticity and depth.
