The last stage of an insect during its metamorphosis is called an Imago, where the species mature.
BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY presents Imago, a solo exhibition by Harit Srikhao running from October 12 to November 30, 2024. It is a confrontation, chrysalis and culmination of his practice in image making. Srikhao looks at the process of maturing as a coming to terms, not as surrendering of oneself to age but rather a synthesis of memories – a conversation to reclaim the image of the self. This presentation marks the artist’s first exhibition with BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY.
Sharing the title of the exhibition, Srikhao’s first venture into moving image making, Imago is born of the artist’s process of undergoing therapy. The trauma born of the estrangement with the image of his past, his practice approaches the act of healing and understanding himself not as a eradication of it. Rather, the coming into shape of its excess, finding form to memories good and bad. The film presents a jumbled and disjointed narrative of rediscovering oneself in forms semi-visible. An attempt to have a conversation with himself as well as the image of his past, Srikhao tackles the agency of his own image and his own story. What does it mean when he cannot recognize himself in it? and how does he come to understand the position he is in now against the blurry images of the past.
Not a mere confrontation but an ever evolving process of continuous effort, Harit addresses the core of his image making practice. Seeing himself through not only practices of the past but himself as a person.
Alongside Imago Srikhao will present new photographic works Can a Moth Remember Its Caterpillar Days?, Histogenesis and Window 2024-2014 and moving image Papermache. Setting the stage with the literal materials of his past and documented images in search of days gone by. They take a look at the space as a whole as to what is conducive to a pupae process, a state of vulnerability seeking to shed itself.
Released and produced in parallel to the exhibition is Tinnawat Chankloi, Window (Demo version). A long time collaborator and musician, Chankloi’s track is featured in Imago. Crafted in conversation to the work, the track reconfigures the narrative of sonic cues prevalent in coming of age cinema. A simple string of melodies hinting at a conclusion that would never arrive.
