The MATDOT Art Center sheds light on often-overlooked aspects of the art world, such as academic writing in higher education, through the mixed-media exhibition The Revisions of the Dinosaur. Created by Rosalin Gast, a former university professor with over three decades of experience mentoring art students, this work captures the tension and humor in the dynamic between teachers and students.
As a thesis advisor, Rosalin frequently faced challenges stemming from her students' struggles with academic writing, even when their artistic skills were exceptional. Her time was often consumed revising their work, especially editing for academic tone. Despite repeated mistakes, students approached her feedback with surprising acceptance and humor, fostering a unique bond between teacher and student.
Rosalin likens the relentless task of revisions to “a dinosaur’s stubborn persistence,” visually expressed in the exhibition by showcasing pages of academic reports filled with her handwritten corrections. This highlights the effort and patience involved in fostering growth in students and reflects the enduring relationship between teacher and student, built on perseverance and mutual development.
The exhibition The Revisions of the Dinosaur runs free of charge from December 16, 2024, to January 12, 2025, at Blacklist Gallery, Mad Dot Art Center, Lan Luang Road, Pom Prap Sattru Phai District, Bangkok. An opening ceremony is scheduled for Monday, December 16, at 6 PM.
