Everyone, at some point, has been a ‘monster’ in someone else’s eyes.

River City Bangkok proudly presents “BAKUMBAA: I Am the Monster”, the debut solo exhibition by BAKUMBAA (Danai Seneesaowaluk), the creative mind behind the four-eared creature, “Babaa”. This character, born from the artist’s personal journey and deep-seated experiences, takes center stage in this exhibition. Through evocative oil paintings and a delightful array of art toys, BAKUMBAA invites you to explore the origins of Babaa—a monster you’re bound to fall in love with.

“BAKUMBAA: I Am the Monster” tells the story of Babaa, an extraterrestrial being who finds himself stranded on Earth. Seen as a ‘monster’ by other life forms, Babaa embodies the innocence and determination of a child facing an unfamiliar world. Through trials and triumphs, Babaa carves out his own tribe, calling in “Bakumbaa”, in the hope that one day he will find companions who understand him—creatures like himself who can share in his journey.

About the artist

BAKUMBAA, or Danai Seneesaowaluk, is an art toy designer who channels his personal feelings and experiences into his creations. His work reflects themes of alienation, oddity, and being out of place—emotions that arise when we find ourselves in unfamiliar settings with unknown people, making us feel like ‘monsters’ or outsiders. To capture these sentiments, BAKUMBAA has designed a character named “Babaa”, an extraterrestrial being who has inadvertently strayed from his home planet to Earth. To the other creatures on Earth, Babaa appears as a ‘monster’. This character embodies the struggles and learning process of a child trying to navigate and overcome the challenges of a new world. In creating this, BAKUMBAA has established his own tribe, named “Bakumbaa”, with the hope that one day he will find friends or beings like himself with whom he can belong.

Come embark on an adventure into the fascinating world of Bakumbaa at “BAKUMBAA: I Am the Monster”. This immersive journey will be open for free exploration from 7 December 2024 - 5 January 2025 at the RCB Photographers' Gallery, 2nd Floor, River City Bangkok.
